Casa Alcindo

The ground here is black volcanic rock, and Pico de Fogo rises directly behind the building. Casa Alcindo is a small guesthouse built inside the caldera of an active volcano, on the island of Fogo. Its nine rooms are simple and en-suite, each one a plain base for exploring the crater floor rather than a destination in itself. Vineyards grow in the volcanic soil nearby, tended by the same families who run the guesthouse kitchen. At the on-site restaurant, meals are cooked with produce grown in that same ground: beans, corn, and coffee raised on soil that erupted less than a century ago. The air smells faintly of sulphur on still days. Guests arrive after the drive up from the coast, climbing through cloud into the caldera, and most stay to walk the crater or start the ascent to the summit at dawn. It is a quiet, working corner of the island, not a resort. Rooms are unfussy, built for people who spend their days outdoors and want a clean bed and a hot meal at the end of it. It is a short, striking stay, built entirely around the mountain it sits inside.
