Casona Distante

Built into a colonial-era adobe farmhouse, Casona Distante keeps its original wood floors and thick clay walls, cooled through the valley's hot, dry summers. It sits in Alcohuaz, the last village up the Elqui valley, 120 km from La Serena on roads that climb steadily past vineyards and pisco distilleries. The river runs close by, and guests can walk down to its bank, sand underfoot and poplars overhead. Phone signal is patchy here. That is largely the point. Rooms come in three configurations: a king suite, a king or twin double, and a triple for groups or families, each with a private bathroom, daily housekeeping and breakfast at the on-site bistro. The restaurant works from family recipes and local produce, plain plates built around what the valley grows. Outdoor hot tubs sit under open sky, used most often after dark, when the Elqui valley's clear air makes it one of Chile's better places for watching stars and planets through a guided session. There is also a pool set among native plants, a shared lounge, and a bar. Massage and alternative therapies are offered on site, and the lodge arranges horseback rides, mountain biking and vineyard visits nearby. Check-in runs from 2pm. Checkout is at noon, though guests may stay in common areas until 6pm at no extra charge.
