Chalten Camp

Arrival is a two-and-a-half to three-hour drive from El Calafate airport along Route 40, the steppe opening before Fitz Roy's granite spires appear on the horizon. Chalten Camp is a cluster of twelve domes, each 27 square metres, set where the native forest meets open sky inside Los Glaciares National Park. Every dome has a wood-burning stove, a queen bed, and a private bathroom. Premium Domes sit closest to the tree line with wider interiors and unobstructed views of the mountain; Deluxe Domes sit further into the forest, smaller and more enclosed, framed by trunks and filtered light. Two shared domes anchor the camp: one a lounge, the other a restaurant, both facing Fitz Roy and both lit by candles and firelight in the evening. The kitchen works from clay ovens and slow cooking, built around what is grown or caught locally, with chef Martín Lukesch overseeing the menu. Days start with a hike. The camp arranges guided treks to Laguna de los Tres, packrafting on glacier-fed rivers and lakes, salmon fishing, and birdwatching through the surrounding lenga forest. Weather shifts fast here — sun, wind, and cloud can trade places within a single afternoon, and summer temperatures swing between 5°C and 20°C. Layers are not optional. Hammocks and picnic tables line the short trail networks near camp for those staying closer to base.
