Chateau Bela
Set with vines around its walls, Hotel Château Bela makes its own wine and pours it a few steps from where the grapes grow. The estate sits in Belá, in the south of Slovakia, close to the border with Hungary. It is a working château, not a museum piece: the cellars produce bottles sold on-site through the hotel's own wine shop, and the surrounding parkland gives the grounds a settled, planted character rather than a manicured one. The hotel holds 43 rooms and suites. Two restaurants serve the estate, drawing on its own labels for the wine list, and a spa wing adds a sauna, a steam bath and an outdoor pool for guests who want the grounds without the glass. History runs through the building rather than around it: the château's own account of its past forms part of what guests are shown, alongside the park and its plantings. You can walk from the cellar to the dining room in the time it takes to choose a vintage. The rooms and suites vary within the 43 count, giving couples and small groups options without the estate ever feeling corporate. It remains, first, a vineyard building with a hotel built into it.
