Check-in happens on Avenida da Boavista, in central Praia. Chez Maria Júlia is a boutique hotel of 12 rooms, each fitted with Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom, and a training restaurant that doubles as a culinary school. Rooms run to 31 m², split between Simple and Double configurations, the latter with two beds and a desk for longer stays. It is a compact stay. Bougainvillea and Sempre Noiva blooms line the patios and gardens, in shades of pink, lilac, red and orange. A terrace bar sits above the street with a view toward the sea, open daily from morning into the evening, serving tapas, cocktails and a menu that runs from burgers to waffles. Downstairs, Restaurant Passarinha centres on a working fountain and cascade, and takes reservations for Sunday service by the day before. Between 70 and 90 percent of ingredients come from Cape Verdean producers, sourced directly and rotated by season, a policy the kitchen applies across its own menu and the restaurant-school's teaching plates. The hotel also runs a training programme for young Cape Verdeans entering hospitality, many with no prior experience, folding staff development into daily service. The result is a small hotel built around one street corner, one kitchen and one terrace, rather than a sprawling resort footprint.
