City Hotel Thimphu

Check-in leads guests into a four-star hotel built around forty rooms, set in Thimphu's main business district on Chubachu Road. Founded in 2023 by three sisters, it is run and owned by women, a fact the hotel treats as central to its identity rather than incidental. Rooms pair traditional Bhutanese joinery and textiles with double-glazed windows, central heating and cooling, and blackout curtains, a combination the hotel notes as uncommon in the city. Grand Deluxe rooms run to 310 square feet and add a balcony over the valley. The Premium Studio, at 425 square feet, includes a kitchenette and a separate bathtub and shower, aimed at longer stays or business travellers. It is quiet work here, too. A business centre with printing sits alongside a rooftop terrace, where guests can watch the valley light change over an evening drink. The restaurant serves Bhutanese and international dishes, sourced from local farms where possible. Kaja Throm market lies 450 metres off, and Tashichho Dzong is a 2.2-kilometre walk. The hotel also gives free gallery space to VAST Bhutan, a local artists' collective, and hires staff through Bhutan's Disabled People's Organization. Braille signage and wheelchair access run through the building. It amounts to a compact, considered base for exploring the capital, built on family ownership rather than a chain's template.
