Darwin’s Townhouse

Stepping through the door on St Julian's Friars, guests enter a Georgian townhouse dating to around 1760, bought as the Sandford House Hotel in January 2016 and refurbished over three months before reopening as Darwin's Townhouse. The building is Grade II* listed. It sits in the centre of Shrewsbury, close to the River Severn path and the riverside walks of the Quarry, with the town's black-and-white Tudor buildings a short walk away. Nineteen rooms are split between the main house and a garden building added in 2003, the latter with ground-floor access straight onto the garden. Room sizes range from a 94-square-foot single to a 267-square-foot king superior with bath. Each room carries duck feather bedding, Noble Isle toiletries and a coffee machine, with hypoallergenic bedding available on request. An honesty bar sits on the ground floor near reception. The whole property can also be hired privately, giving a group sole use of the lounge, bar and garden. It works equally well as a short overnight stop or a base for exploring Shrewsbury's centre on foot.
