Diphlu River Lodge

Thatch and bamboo, raised on cement stilts: the twelve cottages here take their form from Mishing tribal houses, built tall because the river floods each year. Four face the water, the rest look over paddy fields, and each has a folding glass door onto a verandah strung with cane chairs. Furniture, canework and handloom textiles inside come from artisans across northeast India, some woven by a weaving unit next door. Rooms sleep two and keep things simple: a writing desk, a mini-bar, a kettle with tea and coffee, and an en-suite bathroom with a dressing area. The lodge sits within reach of Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site holding the world's largest population of one-horned rhino and a dense population of Bengal tiger. Two jeep safaris run daily, morning and afternoon, with a resident naturalist along for both. When the park is open, guests can also swap a safari for a slow crossing of the Brahmaputra by country boat, watching for the region's Gangetic dolphins over tea and snacks. A low-light, low-noise policy holds after dark. The lodge is reached by road from Guwahati, Jorhat or Tezpur airports, and takes no passing visitors — only guests booked to stay.
