Dream Gobi Lodge

Arrival is across open steppe, the Gobi's hard-packed gravel and rock running flat to the horizon on every side. Dream Gobi Lodge sits in Ömnögovi, in Bulgan, a region named from the Mongolian word for a place vast and dry. It is a ger camp. Guests sleep in traditional felt gers rather than fixed rooms, each fitted with a private bathroom, television and hairdryer, so the desert's plainness stops at the tent flap. Outside, the light does the work: the steppe changes colour through the day, pale at noon and rust-coloured toward evening, and at night the sky over the camp carries none of the glow of a town. You can hear very little after dark beyond wind and the occasional dog from a neighbouring herder's camp. By day the lodge runs to comforts unusual for the region. An outdoor pool sits on site, a plain answer to Gobi heat, alongside a restaurant and a bar serving meals through the day. Parking is ample for the 4x4s and minivans that bring most guests in from Dalanzadgad or the surrounding tracks. It is a quiet base for exploring the desert beyond, not a spectacle in itself.
