The walls are volcanic stone, cut round in the shape of the traditional funco houses of Chã das Caldeiras. Six of them stand here, each named for a colour: Amarelo, Roxo, Preto, Verde, Azul, Vermelho. Furniture is built from reclaimed pallets. Rainwater is caught and stored in a well, then recycled again after use, watering the garden and refilling the toilets. Solar panels supply the electricity and heat the water. Every room has its own bathroom with hot water and free WiFi, run on sun rather than grid power.

EcoFunco sits inside the Fogo caldera itself, at the base of the volcano that gives the island its name and its ash-black ground. From the terrace, Pico do Fogo rises directly overhead, close enough that the climb up it begins almost from the door. João, who runs the property with his sister Léa, guides guests up the volcano and arranges the via ferrata route and the descent to Mosteiros; his sister Isabel cooks. It is a small place, six rooms only, built for people heading out onto lava rock and back again. Breakfast is taken in the room. The nearest reference points are the Fogo National Park office and the park's own scenic viewpoint on Pico, both a short walk off. Airport transfers and free parking are arranged directly. Nights here are dark enough that the caldera rim shows plainly against the sky.
