Ecole Lodge Antananarivo
Raised from bare ground starting in 2012, Ecole Lodge Antananarivo took its name from the idea of an 'Ecole de la vie', a school of life for guests and neighbours alike. The site sits in the Analamanga highlands near Antanetibe, outside Antananarivo, where terraced rice fields climb the hills around it. Three room types make up the lodge: Garden Villas with a private terrace, Bungalows facing the mountains with their own veranda, and Mountain Front Suites with a king bed and a wide veranda. Each is built and finished in a style that leans on the surrounding land rather than against it. A guided hike of 23 km crosses paddy terraces and passes through villages, meeting farmers along the way. The ELA Botanical Garden nearby holds medicinal and endemic plants, walked with a guide who explains local ecological practice. Evenings often bring Vako-drazana, a traditional performance of dance, song and percussion by the group Hasi-Mirary. Meals draw on regional dishes such as kalapaka and romazava, served on a terrace that looks out over the hills or packed for a picnic on excursion days. It is a modest, working stretch of highland countryside. Guests can also visit the Sacred Hill of Ampananina and a workshop where paper is made by hand nearby. The pool and bar round out a lodge built less as a retreat than as a base for walking the land around it.
