El Gallo Ecolodge

Water moves through El Gallo in stages: natural pools cut into the hillside, fed and cooled by the surrounding forest, edged by gardens grown for the kitchen. The lodge sits above El Cupey in the hills behind Puerto Plata, a short climb from the coast rather than on it. Cabanas here are simple and low, each with a private bathroom, fan, mosquito net, and Wi-Fi, built for warm nights rather than air conditioning. Meals lean vegetarian, drawn largely from the on-site garden and nearby farms. The lodge holds up to fifty overnight guests and can take a hundred more for the day, a scale kept deliberately modest. Founded in 2015 by Bryn Toledano and Ernesto Liranzo, El Gallo grew from a small ecological project into a working base for La Ruta del Gallo, a community tourism route launched in 2017 with backing from Japan's development agency and the Dominican tourism ministry. More than fifty local artisans, cooks, and farmers now supply the lodge directly, from mamajuana infused with forest herbs to sweets and handwork sold in the gift shop. Guided walks lead through butterfly gardens and medicinal plant plots, and there is horseback riding and hiking further into the hills. It runs less like a coastal retreat and more like a working village annex, hospitality braided into the surrounding farms and households. Check-in starts at 3pm.
