El Questro Homestead

Chamberlain Gorge cuts beneath El Questro Homestead, its orange cliffs dropping to a river that colours the whole outlook. The homestead sits on a bluff above the water, part of a 700,000-acre spread of Kimberley land in Western Australia, reached along the Gibb River Road near Durack. Frangipani trees line the grounds. Ten rooms and suites face the gorge, each with an en-suite bathroom, minibar, ceiling fan and air conditioning against the outback heat. Rooms are arranged so most open onto the river view, and the light shifts across the water from sunrise to sunset. A restaurant and self-service bar sit near a swimming pool cut into the lawn, with Wi-Fi across the property. Guests can cruise the gorge by boat, walk the surrounding trails, or drive out to Zebedee Springs, where warm water pools beneath a stand of palms. Evenings are quiet, the gorge holding the heat after the sun drops behind the cliffs. The garden runs green against the burnt orange rock, a deliberate contrast that gives the homestead its character. It is a working part of a cattle station turned wilderness park, not a resort built from scratch, and the setting still shows it. Distances here are real: nothing about the drive in is quick, and that is part of the point.
