Elgon Trekkers Base Camp

Set at the base of Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano whose Wagagai peak rises to 4,321 metres, Mount Elgon Trekkers runs guided routes into the national park from Sipi. The mountain carries the largest volcanic base in East Africa and a caldera that spans 40 km, with its slopes protected as a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve. It is a working range, not a backdrop. Four trails lead to the summit. The Sipi trail, a moderate circuit from Sipi to Bushiyi, takes four to five days; the Bushiyi trail is steeper and shorter, at three to four days; the Piswa trail, the longest and gentlest, runs five to six days. A day hike option covers the lower park for those short on time. Ranger guides, cooks, and porters accompany each trek, carrying tents, food, and water so hikers move with only day packs. Camps sit among caves and wooden shelters, and frost can settle on the ground at the highest pitch. The park holds 300 recorded bird species alongside mountain antelope and rare highland plants. Below the peak, the operator also runs half-day activities around Sipi Falls: abseiling beside a 100-metre drop, rock climbing, and a coffee tour through local Arabica plots. Treks depart year-round from Sipi town.
