Engholm Husky Design Lodge
Log cabins and fifty sled dogs beside the Karasjohka river near Karasjok
Engholm Husky Design Lodge is set beside the Karasjohka river just outside Karasjok, in Norway's far north. Fifty sled dogs are kept on site, and the lodge runs dog sled tours, cross-country skiing, canoe rental, and reindeer herder visits. Each cabin is hand built in log and finished with its own interior: Bihka and Halde sleep up to five across two bedrooms, Reanga is smaller at 20 square metres, and Buvri and Raktu offer sleeping alcoves with full privacy across 45 square metres. Some cabins share a toilet and shower in a neighbouring house; others have their own. Kitchenettes come with a microwave but no oven, so cooking is simple. A wood-heated sauna lit only by candles sits in its own small cabin. The outdoor hot tub takes about eight hours to prepare, filled from the property's own well and heated by firewood, with no chlorine added. Winter days bring dog sled rides of an hour or half a day, northern light safaris on snowshoes, and cross-country ski lessons; summer shifts to wilderness hikes with pack dogs, ATV safaris up to the Finnmark plateau, and visits to the summer dog camp on a nearby island. Guests can eat in the dining room or cook in their cabin. It is a working sled dog farm as much as a place to sleep.
