Esperanto Lodge

Kafountine, on Senegal's southern Casamance coast, is where Esperanto Lodge sits between the Atlantic and a palm-fringed lagoon inside a marine protected area. The beach out front runs close to fifteen kilometres and is nearly empty most days. Behind it, palms give way to a lagoon where crocodiles surface if you wait long enough, and where close to 160 bird species have been counted, including pelicans, egrets and fish eagles further out toward Kassel island. The lodge itself is small: six rooms across three bungalows, plus a two-bedroom villa set fifty metres from the sand in its own garden. Rooms are fan-cooled rather than air-conditioned, each with a private bathroom, hot water, a terrace and a mosquito net over the bed. Cows wander the sandy track leading in, so the gate at the entrance stays shut behind arrivals. Days here run toward pirogue trips through the Karones islands' mangrove channels, fishing for barracuda and carangue with local boatmen, or a walk into Kafountine village to see its fish market, church and mosque. There is no beach club polish here, just a working stretch of coast and a lagoon that keeps its own rhythm. Ziguinchor, the nearest airport, is a two-hour drive away.
