Estancia Rio de los Ciervos

Set five kilometres south of central Punta Arenas, Estancia Rio de los Ciervos works as a base rather than a destination in itself. The building holds seven rooms, each with a private bathroom and television, plus a restaurant, a wine cellar and a greenhouse on the grounds. Breakfast is included. Parking and an airport transfer are handled on site, and a function space, the Quincho El Pingo, seats twenty-five for events. The location matters more than the building. Dolphins and sei whales turn up if conditions allow. A longer route heads roughly 50 km south of Punta Arenas before a ten-hour sail past glaciers and lenga forest, with sea lions and petrels along the way. Fly-fishing trips run closer to the estancia itself. Rooms are simple rather than showy. The hotel functions as a staging point for a day on the water, with breakfast and a bed to return to.
