Evolution Diving Resort
An owner-run dive resort where thresher sharks are practically neighbours
Fringed by palm trees and white sand, the rooms at Evolution sit a short walk from Bounty Beach on Malapascua Island, off Cebu's northern tip. The resort holds 16 air-conditioned rooms across two categories, Deluxe and Standard, each with its own terrace and hot water. Deluxe rooms, the newer builds, stand about 75 metres from the water and are furnished with handcrafted mahogany beds and granite-topped sinks. It is a small, personally run operation, founded in 2010 by two dive instructors who still live on the island.
Diving is the point of staying here. Boats leave for Kimud Shoal, where thresher sharks surface daily, and Monad Shoal, home to tiger sharks and cleaning stations. Evolution also runs a house reef, muck-diving territory for seahorses, frogfish, and nudibranchs, and maintains one of the few technical diving operations on the island, with trimix and rebreather courses run by instructors who have logged wreck dives past 100 metres nearby. You can hear the surf from the open-air restaurant, The Craic House, which serves homemade food and cocktails on the sand each evening. Staff and owners eat and drink alongside guests most nights.
