Fafapiti Lodge Fakarava

Facing a lagoon calm enough to read as glass most mornings, Fafapiti Lodge sits on a stretch of private beach on Fakarava atoll, in the Tuamotu archipelago north-east of Tahiti. The whole atoll is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and the water beyond the sand is where its reputation rests. The lodge itself is small: three bungalows, run by Valérie and René, former diving instructors who have lived in the Tuamotus for twenty-five years. Bungalow Honu and Bungalow Oua sleep two; Bungalow Mako, the quadruple, suits families. Power comes from a photovoltaic array, drinking water from a filtered fountain refilled into thermos flasks left in every room, and kitchen supplies come chiefly from local fishermen and farmers. It is a compact stay. Half board covers breakfast and dinner, with sandwiches available for lunch on request, and airport transfers are included. Bikes and kayaks sit ready at no charge, useful for exploring the shore or paddling out toward the reef. Beach towels are not supplied, so guests bring their own. The pace here follows the tide and the light rather than a schedule, and evenings on the private beach tend to end with nothing louder than water on sand.
