Áfangagil

Áfangagil is a cluster of two cabins set in the highlands near Hekla, one of Iceland's most active volcanoes. The ground here is quiet, cut by walking paths and horse trails that run out toward Landmannalaugar. The two cabins have heating and running water and together hold up to 40 people, making the place suited to groups as much as couples or families. A paddock, straw and hay bales are kept on hand for anyone arriving on horseback, a nod to the site's use by riders crossing the highlands. Camping is allowed on the grounds for those who prefer canvas to a bunk. Showers are available for a small charge. There is no restaurant or bar; guests bring their own food, and a fee covers use of the cabin kitchen for eating supplies brought from outside. It is a plain, working base rather than a resort, built for people moving through the highlands on foot or on horseback. The silence is the main amenity, broken only by wind and, occasionally, other travellers on the trail outside.
