Gaia Riverlodge

Reached by an electric tram that carries guests down to the river, Gaia Riverlodge sits above the Five Sisters Waterfalls in Belize's Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. The lodge runs entirely on hydropower and grows much of its own produce in an organic garden. Sixteen thatch-roofed cabanas, suites and a private villa are built from Belizean hardwood and palmetto, each looking out over jungle, river, mountain or falls. Matouk and Frette linens and hand-painted tiles furnish rooms that otherwise stay close to the forest around them. You can hear the falls from a private veranda after dark. The open-air restaurant sits above the waterfalls too, serving Belizean and international dishes built around what the garden yields that week. Days here run toward the surrounding reserve: hiking beneath pine stands, swimming in clear waterfall pools, canoeing to cave systems, and day trips to Maya ruins including Caracol. Birders come for toucans and parrots among migratory species drawn to Mountain Pine Ridge's mixed habitat. A rainforest spa, worked into the same quiet, offers treatments to the sound of birdsong and falling water. The lodge holds Green Globe certification for its environmental practices. It is a compact, secluded stay, and getting there takes some planning, but the lodge's team manages transfers and logistics from arrival at the airport onward.
