Gal Oya Lake Club

Framed by water on one side and tropical garden on the other, Gal Oya Lake Club sits at the edge of the Senanayake Samudraya, Sri Lanka's largest reservoir. Rooms are spread across three settings: two suites in the main house, three colonial-style bungalows, and two canvas tents pitched to face the sunrise. Each has its own bathroom and a veranda that looks over lake or garden. The tents catch both ends of the day, sunrise through the canvas in the morning and, come evening, the sky reddening over open water. A small village borders the property, and the grounds are planted with native foliage that draws in birdlife. Two infinity pools sit apart from each other, so guests are rarely sharing water with a crowd. A pontoon moored on the lake serves kayaking at dawn or dusk, and fishing for anyone willing to cook their own catch; the kitchen supplies prawns as backup. The outdoor restaurant runs on homemade Sri Lankan curries and a wood-fired pizza oven, plus international dishes made to order. A small spa offers massage and facial treatments for those who would rather stay off the water. Badminton, table tennis, and bicycles round out the activity list. It is a quiet, low-key stay, built around the lake rather than around itself.
