Gangtey Tent Resort

Gangtey Tent Resort is a cluster of ten tented rooms pitched in the Phobjikha Valley, in Wangdue Phodrang district. The valley is a wintering ground for the black-necked crane, and the birds pass close to camp between November and March. Each tent runs on underfloor heating, a detail that matters at this altitude, along with a safe locker, humidifier and a small patio for looking out over the valley. Twin and double layouts are available, both fitted with a work area, intercom and a kettle stocked with tea and coffee. It is a compact stay, and the scale keeps service personal rather than programmatic. The on-site restaurant serves Bhutanese dishes cooked à la carte, and a traditional hot stone bath can be arranged at a nearby farmhouse. Evenings tend toward the bonfire pit, with khuru and archery on offer for guests who want to try the local games. Horse riding can be booked with advance notice and an additional charge. Wi-Fi reaches all rooms and the public areas, useful given the valley's remove from Bhutan's larger towns. Gangtey Monastery sits within reach for a half-day visit, and the nature trail through the valley floor gives a flatter, easier walk than most routes in this part of the country. The black-necked crane festival, held locally each winter, draws visitors to the same fields the resort overlooks.
