Gargia Lodge

Established on Finnmark's first overland mail route under Danish rule, Gargia Lodge began as one of several mountain shelters spaced roughly 30 kilometres apart, where postmen and their helpers broke their crossing of Finnmarksvidda. The original lodge was rebuilt in the 1950s after the war and stayed under state ownership into the 1970s. It is a compact stay. From the 1970s it passed into family hands and opened to travellers and locals drawn to the quiet at the edge of the plateau. Æventyr took over in 2021, keeping the building's long role as a waypoint while adding a full programme of Arctic outings. Rooms are plain and warm, with tea and coffee facilities, electric heating, and a sitting area; a Scandinavian-style sauna looks out over forest and river. Breakfast is included and the restaurant serves Norwegian dishes by season. You can join a dog-sled trip along the same postal trail the lodge once served, or head onto the Finnmarksvidda plateau by snowmobile or ATV. Meeting rooms hold up to fifty for groups. Set thirty minutes from Alta, the lodge remains what it was two centuries ago: a fixed point of shelter on a route through open, largely unlit country, now used for aurora viewing rather than mail.
