GoctaLab Art Lodge

Cocachimba, in the Valley of Waterfalls, has been home to GoctaLab since its founders began building a coffee farm and art residency here over a decade ago. Sergio Abugattás, a sculptor, and Gianna Olcese, a painter and producer, set the project beside the Gran Gocta waterfall, one of the tallest in the world, and built it around mudbrick and quincha construction rather than concrete. There is no air conditioning and no television. Four room types make up the lodge: the Mirador's Room, tuned for birdwatching; the Couple's Room, facing the coffee farm and its gardens; a Family Bungalow near the river trail; and the off-grid Pirqapata Cabin, a 120 m² solar-powered space with two private terraces and its own kitchenette. Each room looks out on the waterfall. The pool runs chlorine-free, filtered instead by the roots of local plants, an odd but functional bit of engineering. Days run to farm-to-table meals from the on-site garden, a tour of the shaded arabica coffee field, and residencies for artists working in ceramics, sculpture or woodworking. Guests can also arrange canyoning, rafting on the Marañón River, or a day at a Huancas ceramics workshop nearby. The waterfall stays visible from most points on the property, a constant backdrop rather than a scheduled view.
