Golden Pineapple Villas sits on 14 acres above Uvita, on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, with the bulk of that land left as protected habitat rather than built out. Howler monkeys call from the trees at dawn; you can hear them from the terrace before the kitchen opens for breakfast. The property is adults only and runs as a boutique hotel, with one- and two-bedroom villas rather than standard rooms. Water Villas measure 850 square feet and pair an outdoor soaking tub with an outdoor shower and a private pool steps from the bed. Sunset Villas run larger, at 1,100 square feet, with a private sun deck and an infinity pool set to catch both ocean and mountain views. Interior design mixes modern lines with Costa Rican craft touches, including artwork made specifically for the property. Every villa has its own kitchen and living area, air conditioning, and high-speed wireless internet. Soaps and lotions are made locally by hand. The hotel sources produce from area farmers and fishermen, and donates a share of profit from each stay to a local cause the guest selects. It is a compact stay. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended for the access road and surrounding terrain, given the mountainous approach along the coast.
