Goldfield Suites

Marsden's gravel once carried gold, worked by diggers between 1864 and 1867 and later by Chinese miners at Woods Creek, whose tunnels remain in the valley above. Goldfield Suites now sits on that reclaimed ground, four Queen Cottages and a Queen Studio built where the old workings gave way to regenerating native bush. Gold still turns up in the stream. Each 42 m² cottage is self-contained, with a separate bedroom, a lounge, a kitchenette, and a private deck facing the Kaiata and Paparoa Ranges. The Queen Studio, at 32 m², sits in the main building and is access-friendly, with its own bathroom. Weka wander the grounds by day, and kiwi are often heard after dark. A fifteen-minute bush track runs from the property, and Shantytown Heritage Park, a rebuilt 1860s goldrush town, is a short walk away. Guests can borrow a gold pan and try fossicking at Moonlight Gully or Nelson Creek, or in the property's own stream. Evenings centre on a hosted slow-cooked meal shared with other guests, weather permitting a soak in the wood-fired hot tub afterwards. Greymouth's town centre is a 10-minute drive. The West Coast Wilderness Trail starts nearby, with secure parking on site for hikers and cyclists heading out for the day or longer. It is an adults-only stay, built for quiet.
