Grianaig Guest House

Set on a croft plot at Garryhellie, a mile outside Daliburgh, Grianaig Guest House sits within easy reach of South Uist's main links: Lochboisdale ferry ten minutes away, Benbecula Airport half an hour, Askernish Golf Club just up the road. The building holds four ensuite rooms, two king and two superking, each with blackout curtains, a desk and plenty of charging points; the superking rooms add a smart TV with Netflix. There are no kettles in the rooms. Instead, a shared guest lounge runs a Nespresso machine and hot water boiler around the clock, alongside home-baked treats and an honesty bar stocked with wine, beer and a growing whisky list. Breakfast is cooked to order between 8am and 8.40am, with eggs from the owners' own hens and ducks. Chris, the chef-owner, trained over thirty years in hotels and restaurants before running a pub and then a restaurant in Porthleven, Cornwall, with his wife Carla; dinner here is by advance booking only, built around local produce such as North Uist venison and Namara Seafoods scallops. Outside, the west coast beaches at Askernish and Kildonan lie a short drive off, and the Hebridean Way passes close by for walkers and cyclists. On a clear night, you can sometimes see the Milky Way from the garden. Check-in is from 4pm; no dogs, pets or under-18s.
