Land-based Whale Watching (June - December)

Each year, from June to December, Southern Right whales come into Walker Bay to mate and calve, and Grootbos guides lead guests to elevated rocky outcrops along the coastline for close, land-based viewing. No boat is needed: the whales breach and blow within sight of the shore, often close enough to watch without binoculars. Guides know the vantage points where sightings are most likely and can explain the whales' behaviour as they watch. Some guests return in the evening to the same stretch of coast for sundowners, watching the whales breach as the light fades.
