Guacimo Lodge

Arriving by boat is the only way in. There is no road. The lodge sits on 50 hectares of primary and secondary forest along the San Juan River, inside the buffer zone of the Indio Maiz Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest protected lowland forests in Central America at 2,700 km². It has eight bungalows, run entirely on renewable energy, kept deliberately few to limit the lodge's footprint. Rooms are split between river-view and superior river-view bungalows, plus a family house set for direct contact with the forest. Rancho Grande holds the restaurant and main lounge; a separate yoga deck and pool sit apart from it. From the water, guides lead canoe trips toward a sunken 19th-century steamship, night tours spotting caimans and owls, and forest hikes under a 200-foot hardwood canopy. Indio Maiz holds 65 mammal species, 221 bird species, and four wild cat species, including jaguar and ocelot. A side trip runs to the 17th-century fortress at El Castillo, once built against pirate raids on Granada, its old stone rooms now holding the village's only library.
