Hali Country Hotel

Set on the working farm of Hali in South-East Iceland, the hotel looks out to three fixed points: the Atlantic to the south, mountains to the north, and the Vatnajökull glacier to the west. The farm has stayed in one family since 1860, now in its fifth and sixth generations, and still runs 200 sheep on its land. The hotel itself holds 35 rooms across single, double and triple configurations, each with a parquet floor, floor heating and a private bathroom with shower. Two rooms are built for wheelchair access, set close to the entrance with king-size beds and larger bathrooms. In a separate building known as the Yellow House, two apartments sleep five guests each, with their own kitchens, living rooms and private entrances. A museum on site, Þórbergssetur, documents rural life in the area through past centuries, tied to the writer Þórbergur Þórðarson, who was born on the farm. The restaurant, in the Þorbergur Center, serves Icelandic food built on local produce, including farm-raised Arctic char and lamb. You can eat there whether staying in the hotel or the apartments, with breakfast served on site. It is a quiet, working base for reaching Jökulsárlón and the wider glacier country nearby. The hotel operates all year.
