Heckfield Place

Heckfield Place is a house in Hampshire, set among gardens, woodland and meadow that have grown up around it for centuries. The building dates to the 18th century, and its rooms are furnished individually to keep faith with that period, each fitted with Sky television, Wi-Fi, a cocktail cabinet, a safe and a small shelf of books. No two rooms match, which suits a house that has never been renovated into uniformity. Food runs on two tracks. Marle serves dishes built from produce grown on the estate's own farm, while Hearth keeps to plainer, classic methods of cooking. The Moon bar pours drinks made with whatever is freshest that week, including its own infusions. There is a spa on site for massages and treatments, tucked away from the main house. You can walk from a treatment room straight into the meadow beyond it, which is not a small thing in Hampshire in winter. The pace here is set by the land rather than the clock: heather, woodland and gardens surround the property on every side, and the kitchens follow the same rhythm, sourcing from the farm as the seasons allow. It is a working landscape as much as a hotel, and the two are hard to separate once you are inside it.
