Helnan Auberge Hotel

Vintage plasterwork and shuttered windows still mark the rooms of this 1937 building, raised as a retreat for King Farouk on the shore of Lake Qarun. It is a compact stay. Fayoum itself claims the title of Egypt's oldest city, and the hotel sits within reach of Dimeh al-Siba and the fossil valley of Wadi Al-Hitan, about ninety minutes' drive from Cairo. Rooms and suites keep their own bathrooms and balconies, cooled by air conditioning, with a kettle laid out for tea. Downstairs, a spa built around a salt cave and a steam bath runs alongside massage rooms and a sauna, with a separate gym and pool for laps or a slow float. You can watch the lake change colour from a balcony as the light drops. The restaurant serves through the day, looking out over water that has drawn visitors here for centuries. Ceilings run higher than modern building allows, and the corridors keep a hush that newer hotels rarely manage. The grounds meet the lake directly, so egrets and other waterbirds work the shallows within view of the terrace. It remains, above all, a working hotel rather than a museum piece: guests come for the birding, the fossil beds nearby, and the quiet, not for a formal tour of the architecture.
