Hólaskjól is a highland lodge set beside an old lava field, formed when Eldgjá erupted between 934 and 940. The lava provides shelter, so wind here is rare. A waterfall sits a five-minute walk up the lava field. The lodge lies about 35 km from the national road along the northern Fjallabaksleið, and roughly 37 km from Landmannalaugar by the F208, a route open to four-wheel-drive vehicles only.
The main building is a two-floor mountain lodge with room for 61 people in sleeping-bag accommodation; each floor has its own entrance, kitchen, WC and shower. Three cabins with a kitchen and WC sleep up to four guests each, with showers in a separate hut. A further house by Lake Langisjór sleeps four to five, with angling rights included. Camping is available too, with WC and shower facilities on site, and riding groups are welcome, with hay for sale.
Built voluntarily by farms in the district around 1970, the lodge passed through local government ownership before the Angling Association of Skaftártunga bought it back in 2006. Vatnajökull National Park keeps a base nearby, about 4 to 5 km from Hólaskjól. Services run from early June to late September, though cross-country skiing and snowmobile trips draw visitors through the winter months too.
