Hornbill Lodge Sabah

Bilit village, on the Kinabatangan River in Sabah, has grown around river tourism for decades, and Hornbill Lodge was built into that pattern as a base for guided river cruises rather than a resort in its own right. Rooms are simple: chalets and dormitories, each with air conditioning, a private balcony and an en-suite bathroom, set back from the water's edge. The restaurant looks over the river. It runs breakfast, lunch and dinner, and doubles as the lodge's only reliable wifi spot, via Starlink, though the connection can be slow. Guests join four river cruises over two days, at dawn and dusk, tracking proboscis monkeys, orangutans, hornbills and, with luck, pygmy elephants along the banks. Two night walks and a jungle trail run on foot, guided, over uneven ground, looking for nests and other signs of orangutans in the canopy. Power runs 24 hours, backed by a generator, though short outages happen. You can hear the river's wildlife from the dining terrace after dark, between cruises. The lodge sits within reach of Sepilok's orangutan and sun bear sanctuaries and the Gomantong caves, both offered as add-ons to a Kinabatangan stay.
