Hotel Arctic Ilulissat

The view is the room. Windows in every wing face the Ilulissat Icefjord, where icebergs calved from one of the world's most active glaciers drift past at close range, lit by daylight or by the pale wash of the midnight sun. Hotel Arctic holds ninety rooms across three wings, named Puisi, Qajaq, and Umiaq, each with its own layout but the same fixed point of reference outside the glass. Superior rooms and Junior Suites look straight onto the fjord; five Outdoor rooms go further, with private terraces that open onto the mountainside and beds positioned so the ice is visible without lifting your head. Underfloor heating runs through every bathroom. Seven Aurora Cabins sit higher on the slope, each around 20 m², built for winter nights when the northern lights appear overhead and for summer ones when the sun barely sets. The hotel's two restaurants, Brasserie Ulo and Restaurant Ulo, work from what local fishers and sealers bring in that day, rather than a fixed seasonal menu. It is billed, without much competition, as the world's northernmost four-star hotel. A five-star conference centre, rated by the Danish trade body HORESTA, occupies the same building. Wi-Fi is free throughout. Beyond the glass, Ilulissat's dog sleds, kayaks, and boat trips to the moraine line where the largest icebergs run aground are a short walk from the lobby.
