Hotel Baren Gonten

Huus Bären is the oldest of the houses that make up Appenzeller Huus in Gonten, its core dating to the early 17th century. It anchors much of the resort's dining and sits within the wider group that also includes Huus Löwen and Huus Quell. Rooms are simple. The building's timber and stone rooms now hold two meeting spaces: the Boardroom Appenzell, 29 square metres for up to twelve people, and the smaller Boardroom Gonten, 23 square metres for up to eight, both with windows onto the green hills around Gonten and the mountains beyond. A former smithy on site houses the Cigar Lounge, a quiet room for slow drinks. The Bärenstobe restaurant serves regional food in a historic room described as modern in spirit, while the Lehnerstobe next door has a fireplace and wall coverings by textile artist Jakob Schlaepfer. Guests can also use the Taverne for coffee or an evening drink by the fire. The wider property's wine cellar, run by cellar master Hans Rhyner, allows tastings for up to nine people in a private space called the Weinfass. You can walk from Huus Bären into the Alpstein hills directly from the door.
