Hotel Casa Escondida

Hotel Casa Escondida is set in the Marcos Sánchez Díaz district of Lívingston, next to the Garifuna Cultural Center, where the Rio Dulce meets the sea. Dense vegetation surrounds the building, home to iguanas and a range of birds the hotel keeps watch over. Rooms come with a private bathroom, air conditioning, hot water and Wi-Fi, each finished with local and national craft work; several deluxe rooms add a balcony facing the river mouth. Common areas run to a small pool, a living room, hammocks and open-air eating spaces. It is a modest, unfussy stay. The town itself has no road access; guests arrive by boat, and the hotel arranges private or shared fast-boat transfers to sites along the coast and river. From here, boats reach the Seven Altars pools, a set of jungle waterfalls emptying toward the sea, and Playa Blanca, a white-sand beach a twenty-minute ride away. Longer trips follow the Rio Dulce canyon upriver to Lake Izabal. Evenings are quiet, with sunrise over the bay a regular fixture for early risers on the terrace. Livingston's main street, a short walk from the hotel, gives a sense of the Garifuna culture that shapes the town. The pace here has little to do with the capital's.
