Guests arrive at Cassoumay Resort to cast a line off the sand, paddle out with a fishing guide, or simply watch boats work the shallows below the veranda. The hotel sits directly on the beach outside Kafountine, in the Ziguinchor region of southern Senegal, about 40 kilometres from the Gambian border. It has five double rooms, ten beds in total, each fitted with a fan, fridge, tea and coffee facilities and a private bathroom with hot water. The main house holds a restaurant and bar with free wifi. A wide veranda wraps the building. From here you can watch the sun drop into the sea.
The beach runs for miles in either direction, mostly empty, with shallow water good for swimming. Surfcasting for skate and catfish is possible right off the sand, and boats can be hired nearby for trips into the Casamance River delta, a stretch of salt-water channels rich in barracuda and jack. Birdwatchers come for the same delta, which holds over 600 recorded species and draws ornithologists from well beyond Senegal. Kafountine itself is known for music, and the hotel can arrange djembe drumming or dance lessons with local instructors. It is a small, plain place to fish, watch birds, and stay near the water.
