Hotel Disko Island

Qeqertarsuaq is a former whaling station, founded in 1773 on the shore of Disko Bay. Hotel Disko Island stands in the middle of this port town, its windows framed by basalt mountains that rise steeply behind the harbour. Around 850 people live here, most working in fishing and hunting, and the coloured wooden houses along the waterfront still read against the dark rock as they must have a century ago. Rooms are simple: singles and doubles with private bathrooms and television, plus two newer seaview suites in Villa Isikkivik, each with its own terrace and kitchenette. The Disko Mountain Lodge extends the stay onto the Lyngmark glacier, a wooden cabin reached on foot. Humpback whales forage offshore in summer. You can walk to the harbour in minutes. Guides lead hikes to the basalt columns at Kuannit, kayak trips among icebergs, and a plunge at Greenland's only black-sand beach, followed by a sauna built from timber. Winters bring dog sledding and, for committed skiers, heliskiing across a landscape scored with volcanic peaks. The hotel's restaurant looks over the same harbour, serving a menu built from seasonal, local ingredients. Nothing about the place is polished for effect; it is a working town with a hotel at its centre, set against some of the oldest rock in Greenland.
