HOTEL SØMA Ilulissat

Founded as a sømandshjem, a lodging and mess hall for fishermen and seafarers along Greenland's west coast, the SØMA name was given by locals long before it became official. Hotel SØMA Ilulissat is one of four properties in the group, spread across Nuuk, Sisimiut, Aasiaat and Ilulissat, with around 150 rooms between them. The Ilulissat hotel sits in the upper part of town. From here, the view runs over the icebergs of the ice fjord and out to open water. Rooms are fitted with kitchenettes, a practical detail for longer stays, and apartments extend into separate living areas. The penthouse apartment adds more room again, suited to families or small groups wanting extra space. Breakfast is included each morning. The group still runs on a non-profit model: proceeds go toward the welfare of local seafarers, fishermen and surrounding communities, a continuation of the original sømandshjem purpose. You can arrange whale safaris and northern lights outings directly through the hotel, alongside the wider slate of Arctic tours run across all four SØMA properties. It is a working link in the group's chain along Greenland's coast, not a stand-alone build. The setting does the rest: Ilulissat's ice fjord, close enough to reach the view without leaving town.
