Hotel Unterwirt

Set on a gentle slope above Kitzbühel, on what the hotel calls the sunniest side of town, Tennerhof looks out over the Kitzbühel Alps and the Streif ski run below the Hahnenkamm. It is a family-run hotel, in the hands of the von Pasquali family since 1929, and the building carries their own antiques and furniture rather than borrowed decor. There are only 39 rooms. That keeps the place small by five-star standards, and gives it the feel of a private house rather than a hotel wing. Rooms range from a 15 m² single up to suites and a two-bedroom family suite of 80 m², each furnished in a Tyrolean style with historic pieces from the family estate. One double room is kept in tribute to Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond novels, a detail the hotel treats as part of its own small mythology rather than a gimmick. Guests can walk the garden in front of the hotel, sit by the open fireplace in the lobby, or use the Spa de Charme, which runs massage and treatment programmes alongside a pool. The restaurant has held its standing among the country's better kitchens for more than three decades. A private chapel sits on the grounds, one more sign that this is a working family property, not a themed one. Check-in guests reach the old town of Kitzbühel on foot.
