Arrival is by boat, the only way in. The crossing from Ilulissat runs about forty minutes through the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage stretch of water crowded with icebergs, and there is a fair chance of a whale along the way. Ilimanaq itself is a small settlement on Disko Bay, and the lodge is built into it rather than apart from it: guests share the paths, the shop, and the harbour with the people who live there year-round.
Fifteen bungalows sit along the edge of the mountain, each with a private terrace and a sea view, some more open than others. From the deck you can watch fishing boats work the clear water below. A short walk from the bungalows stand two of Greenland's oldest houses, once run by the missionary Paul Egede; restored over three years by Realdania and now home to the reception and Restaurant Egede, they won the Europa Nostra award for the work. Original shop fittings remain inside, along with a sail from a whaling ship hung in the restaurant ceiling.
Days run on hikes, boat trips, and time with locals rather than a fixed programme. There is no road out. Breakfast is included; other meals and activities are booked separately, and stays of more than one night allow time to see both the village and the water beyond it.
