Japamala Resort by Samadhi

On the southern shore of Tioman Island, off Malaysia's east coast, Japamala Resort sits on eleven acres of rainforest running down to the South China Sea. The resort has no central lobby. Rooms and villas keep their own entrances, spread through the trees rather than gathered around a shared point, which keeps guests apart by design rather than accident. One chalet is built into the tree tops, raised above the forest floor with rainforest sounds and sea views through the canopy; the resort says each one takes over a year to build, using restored timber rather than new wood. Suites and villas come with sitting areas, flat-screen televisions and en-suite bathrooms. The on-site restaurant serves Indochinese and Thai dishes, and there is an outdoor pool and terrace facing the water. You can hear the forest at night before you see the sea in the morning. Getting there means a public ferry from Mersing Jetty, a crossing of around two hours that runs on sea conditions rather than a fixed timetable. It is a slow arrival. The resort stays open through the low season, when the island quiets and rates drop. Built around existing rainforest rather than cleared ground, Japamala treats the jungle as a neighbour rather than a backdrop, with wildlife left to move through the grounds unchecked.
