Built originally as a retreat for the Maharaja of Mysore, Kabini River Lodge has traded rifles for binoculars. The 54-acre property sits on the southern edge of Nagarhole National Park, where the Kabini river marks the forest boundary. Rooms and cottages face the water. Fourteen cottages make up the Maharaja category, with further rooms in the Viceroy bungalows and a set of tented cottages by the treeline.
Elephants, gaur, sambar and spotted deer move through the surrounding forest, and leopards and tigers are sighted on occasion. Mornings and evenings run to a fixed rhythm: a jeep safari or a boat trip down the Kabini, often both across a stay. In March, April and May, as forest pools dry up, elephants gather at the riverbank in some of the largest wild herds of Asiatic elephant anywhere. You can watch them from a coracle, the traditional bamboo-and-hide craft still used on this stretch of river, or from the deck of a motor launch.
Meals are taken together at the Gol Ghar, a gazebo dining room facing the river, with set times and a shared table. Evenings close with a wildlife film and a campfire. It is a working safari base, not a resort in the usual sense. Ayurvedic treatments are offered separately, run by outside practitioners.
