Kandalama Lodge

The garden here is not tidy. Kandalama Lodge is set inside a mixed stand of trees and greenery near Dambulla, in Sri Lanka's Matale region, and the effect is closer to clearing than lawn. Each lodge has its own terrace and a separate outdoor bathroom, open to the garden air rather than boxed in tile. Rooms carry the standard comforts: air conditioning, a safe, flat-screen TV, minibar, and a kettle stocked with a range of teas. High-quality toiletries are supplied free of charge. Outside, a spacious pool and sun loungers form the centre of the day, a place to linger between excursions rather than rush through. It is a short trip from here. Sigiriya Rock and Pidurangala Rock lie close by, along with the museum tied to Sigiriya, which walks visitors through the site's past. The Dambulla cave temple, known for its rock-cut interiors and religious carvings, rewards a half-day visit. Guests keen on wildlife can arrange a safari to take in the wider area's biodiversity. Back at the lodge, the restaurant serves a full breakfast, either Sri Lankan or continental, with dinner ordered à la carte.
