Kanyemba Lodge

Thatch and pale river stone define the six rondavel chalets at Kanyemba, each with a private deck angled toward the Zambezi. The rooms stay cool without much fuss: ceiling fans, canopy mosquito nets, air conditioning, and walk-in wardrobes with a digital safe tucked into the shelving. A three-suite family unit shares a single deck over the water. Dinner happens outdoors, under the branches of an old wild mango tree, where the kitchen leans Italian and the soundtrack is unscripted — hyena calls, frogs, and on occasion a lion somewhere on the far bank. The pool sits on the riverbank itself, built with an infinity edge angled to blur into the Zambezi, and cooled in the hottest months by a heat exchanger set into the river. Guests reach the lodge's own island bushcamp by boat, a short crossing that opens onto walking safaris focused on tracks, birdlife, and the odd bushbuck or elephant on foot. Morning and sunset cruises run from the lodge itself, drifting past elephant at the water's edge and crocodile working the current. It is roughly two and a half hours by road from Lusaka. Fishing here runs catch-and-release for tiger fish and vundu, a policy the lodge helped establish on this stretch of river. Village walks to nearby Makanya, home to most of the staff, round out a stay built as much around the river as beside it.
