Karkara Base Camp

Set in a gorge on the border between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, the camp sits low among thick vegetation, well away from any paved road. Ak-Sai Travel, the company behind it, has worked in Kyrgyzstan since 1998 and runs the site as one of several yurt and tent camps it operates across the country. Guests sleep two to a tent, in a layout that can hold up to sixty people at once. A single large yurt does double duty as the camp's dining room, its felt walls a contrast to the canvas ranged around it. Facilities are basic and practical: electricity, a shower block, a small bar, and a shop selling souvenirs. It is not a lodge in the conventional sense, but a working base for onward travel. Hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding lead out from the camp into the surrounding gorge, and the Karkyra valley itself is a stop on several of Ak-Sai's multi-day cultural routes linking Bishkek, Issyk-Kul, and the Silk Road cities beyond. You can walk out from the tents directly into open pasture. The border location gives the camp a particular stillness, caught between two countries and far from any town. Guides and coordinators from Ak-Sai's own teams manage logistics on-site, part of the 24-hour ground support the company runs at its properties nationwide.
