Kayanara

Marked by streaks of blue-stained pine, the timber at Kayanara carries the trace of the mountain pine beetle that once moved through the region's forests. The wood turns up throughout the property: in handcrafted furniture built from trees felled on site, in the panelling of Bear and Wolf cabins, in the beams over each wood stove. The ranch runs to 220 acres in the South Cariboo, bordered by Eagle Creek. Four cabins and a set of RV and tenting sites make up the stay. Bear Cabin sleeps up to six across a queen bed, two singles, and two sofa beds. Wolf Cabin, smaller and quieter, is built around a king bed and a single futon. Eagle Cabin, original to the 1930s, keeps its aged woodwork and a loft bed reached by ladder; it operates May to October only. Each cabin has its own deck, fire pit, and barbecue, and laundry is handled in a separate building. On site, greenhouses and a geodesic dome extend the growing season, feeding a small farm store that sells eggs and meat raised on the land. Trails lead straight into the backcountry for hiking or biking. It is a working ranch as much as a place to sleep, and the two functions sit close together throughout.
