Kiho Gorilla Safari Lodge

Bugarama Hill rises above the Ruhija sector, on the eastern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and the lodge sits along its ridge looking south over the tree canopy toward the Virunga volcanoes. Ruhija is Bwindi's highest sector and among its steepest trailheads for gorilla tracking, with several habituated gorilla families ranging the slopes below. Eleven standalone cottages line the hill, each with a wooden deck, a private patio, and a walk-in closet. It is a small lodge by design. Guides here double as trackers, briefing guests each morning before the walk into the forest, where treks can run for hours across ridges and ravines in search of a gorilla family. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the encounter, when it comes, runs to about an hour at close but respectful range. The dining room runs on produce from the lodge's own gardens, and meals shift through the day from breakfast to afternoon tea to dinner. A pool and guided nature walks round out the days between treks. Birdwatchers linger too: Ruhija holds some of Bwindi's rarer forest species, and the calls carry up from the canopy at dawn.
